Can also be used for different versions of OS (ie Vista or XP).

Operating systems are the software that support everything on your computer, you can't play games, watch movies or use programs without an OS, examples;

Windows XP
Windows 7
Linux
Google OS (soon to be, Google it)
Apple Mac

Things like those.
